As the state’s flagship university, The University of Alabama is committed to having a positive and lasting impact on the lives of Alabama residents through its mission of teaching, research, and service. Our commitment to creating and supporting a sustainable environment is a significant component of that commitment.
As an early leader in recycling and energy conservation, the University has implemented a variety of operational initiatives that promote the environmental health and well-being of our campus and the communities we serve. In addition to significant recycling efforts that extend into every aspect of campus life, UA has incorporated the principles of sustainability into our construction programs, automotive services, procurement services, energy conservation and water quality programs, and transportation systems that facilitate a pedestrian-friendly campus.
Working with faculty, staff and student leaders, we have launched educational programs and community service projects designed to raise awareness and change behavior. Research projects and centers focus on a variety of topics that impact the environment—ranging from alternative fuels and vehicles of the future to wetland ecosystems to green manufacturing—and provide UA with significant opportunities to make a difference, now and in the future.
The University will continue to be a good steward of the resources entrusted to us and to nurture leaders who will help create communities that are healthy, sustainable, and environmentally responsible for generations to come.
